Claire, Cara, Kerry, Lucy, Hannah T and I all decided to go on msn and brainstorm all of our ideas online. We all were talking on msn via a group conversation which allowed all of us to view and talk to everyone online. The benefit of brainstorming online is that we were all able to stay at home and do it, some of us were extremely busy and to have to organise a meeting face-to-face would have taken up too much time, therefore by online brainstorming it saved us a lot of time.
However there were some negative aspects to it. Because it was online you sort of had to take turns to say something, and occasionally it was difficult to understand and follow what people were saying. Where as brainstorming your ideas in 'meat space' you would be able to follow peoples ideas easier. In addition, it was also difficult to understand what people were saying sometimes. And at the same time it was harder to express my ideas on the inet than it would be in 'meat space'.

Yes it was handy doing it online because of how much work we have all got at the minute!
ReplyDeleteWe had a look at ideas for next week but because they are in the red section we wont go into much detail :)
Yeah it was quite hard though to get points across because you couldn't know when someone was saying something, and then everyone would say a statement.
ReplyDeleteThanks for including me even though I'm not tchnically in your group.
Very interesting - a real demo in the difference between online and offline comms. Great to see you trying it out AND reflecting on it. The nature of brainstorming is that it is supposed to be fast and without stopping to think too much - but I get the impression that this was a much slower event. this is intersting, as one of the criticisms levied against online comms is that there is no think-time (e.g. email encourages rapid and un-thought-out response, often regretted later) - and yet here is an example of online activity that slows the thinking process down. Well I'm blowed.
ReplyDeleteYes it was interesting, and definately more time effective for all of us!
ReplyDeleteIt was interesting to see how the discussions paned out online. Some of us are faster than others at typing which I felt meant that some people were slower to respond and maybe missed important points.
Saying that, however, I still think that for a quick discussion, when everyone is online together is it an incredibly convenient way of communicating without taking up too much time.
I found it difficult online to get a point across as I would in person as it is difficult to emphasise things and say things in a certain tone. Although this was a very time effective and convenient way of doing it for all of us.
