Topic 1 - nonlinear and nonsequential reading and wirting on Listers reading

Nonlinear and nonsequential reading and writing to me is what the web is all about. As discussed in the previous blog this type of reading and writing allows the produser to access information as to what a particular text would be about. Lister describes this as being a 'node' of text which carries a number of links that will take the produser to other 'nodes', a node being an active electronic device that is attached to other networks. However, Lister see's this as being a multi linear experience because when reading something on the web you have more that one pathway to choose from.
With this, i feel that the produsers knowledge can become broader, learning everything there is to know about the text that they are reading. In addition, Lister mentions the references and citations are also usually hyperlinked again, helping the produser to access more information about the text that they are reading.
Yes, i do feel that with these two factors it does capture the experience of the web. The web is there to be explored, produsers will come to the web intending to find something out, although in addition, they will end up finding out a lot more than what they expected. As Lister states 'it becomes permeable to other texts.'

Topic 2 - Sonia Livingstone and the new reading

Having been to this weeks lecture, i found it really interesting to listen what Dave had to say about Sonia Livingstone and how she questions whether reading is the same as reading used to be?
However i don't think that should be the question i just think that now there are two types of reading traditional reading and the new media reading. As i am reading a book at the moment, as everyone knows, you just read along the book and you have to read it page by page until you come to the end. That is pretty much it. However, when you are reading on the internet you have hyperlinks that can take you everywhere on the internet. They are non linear, you can hop around, it becomes your choice as to whether you stay reading this website or you decided to venture on to another. This then makes us become produsers - we are a producer of meaning and a user of websites. In addition, when you are reading a book, in the past if you would of had a particular question about the book and wanted to get in contact with the author, it would be a case of writing to them and waiting (probably for a long time) for an answer. However, these days if you are reading something on the internet you would be able to contact the writer via email, and it would be easier for the writer to email back to you. Not only would it be easier but also faster.
In addition to the new reading, you have the new literacy that the new media comes with. I believe that the internet is put in place to be a quick and easy solution for everybody to access information, and with this a new literacy has come with it. Because the hypertext takes you all over the place - do you need a new sort of literacy to make the best of media? I think in terms of the younger generation using the internet, i believe that this is the case. As a teen i grew up with MSN messenger and as time went by i found my peers and i using this new type of literacy More often. things like brb - be right back and lol - laughing out loud. It allowed us to reply back quicker and share our emotions easier than having to explain that we were actually laughing out loud. Not only is that the case for MSN but for texting too. Because i have grown up with it, i feel myself writing like that in formal emails etc. In addition, i remember hearing on the news that someschool children were starting to write like that in their exams. It makes me think that when the now younger generation becomes the older generation will this new literacy take over the traditional English, or will a new literacy start?

Topic 3 - authority/identity on the topic of bogs

As you all know i am just a little bit nosey, and therefore once having set up a blogspot i found myself looking through blogs of people that i do not know. Firstly, i feel that it is quite scary how many people that are on the site. It is so popular to say that i had never even heard of blogspot before. However, I feel that having looked through many of the peoples blogs one thing occurred to me, even though this person may have a picture they can create their own image of themselves with writing anything that they want. Take me for instance. I have a picture and I'm smiling and i just look like another young woman who likes to dress up and go out and have a good time (0r well that is just my opinion of that picture) however if someone was then to read what i am writing about Goebell and his opinions on radio etc. hey might think wait a minute i was not expecting that. Is any of this making sense?
I feel that the Internet whether it is an email, website, blog, anything, with the Internet you can be who ever you want to be. To me that is quite scary. Looking at the bad side of things you have issues with paedophiles pretending to be 15 when really they are 45 waiting for its next victim. People can manipulate anybody on the Internet and unfortunately it is becoming more and more popular. In addition, partners can have an affairs on the internet telling people that they aren't married when they could be. To me, when i meet a stranger no matter where it is on the internet i am very weary of who they actually are, with or without a picutre.
However, when it comes to authority i feel that there is sometimes a secure system set in place. I dont quite know how blogspot works with safety, but on facebook i know that if someone or something for that matter is offending, or scaring you in anyway you can report it. Therefore, even though there are issues with the internet, safety is also establishing itself to become more powerful and authoritive.
Do you feel safe when using the internet? and in relation to what i said about identity, have you ever told anything to anyone that was not true about you? Did you create yourself a different identity?

Topic 2 - Navigating, expressing and interacting with web forums

When talking about web forums we can take this course's forum into consideration. Unlike seminars that take place face to face this interactivity is asychronous, as where you can post your thoughts and opinions on the forum and people can reply as and when they want to. To me, this does not seem like a normal conversation where spoken words are exchanged, however i believe that along with this new media a new type of conversation has been created. One that allows you to say what you want to say. With this is mind, this type of interactivity enables you to express yourself in any way that you want to. With a face to face conversation, or maybe even a telephone conversation you can sometimes find yourself expressing your views in a manner that maybe could offend somebody, or you might feel that you want to make a certain impression of yourself. Indeed this might sound appealing to some people who cannot necessarily interact with people face to face, but the 'conversation' will not flow as it would do otherwise. In addition, you do not have to reply to everything you can come as you wish. This making you a produser, a producer of meaning and being a user of a website.
Indeed, these new types of conversations seem to be a great advance in technology, even though this is a little of the mark, i want you to think about this one question:
since letters, alerts and even bank statements are now online, is there a future for Royal Mail? In 10 years time do you think people will writing their letters or thoughts to each other or sending them via email, forums, etc.?

Topic 2 - Internet and the impact on Soceity

For me, the Internet is a free and easy way to not only access information but also to talk to your friends and family wherever they are in the world and for entertainment purposes also. Each day, there becomes new and easier ways to do things, like for example there are sites that can tell you how to get from A to B and there are social networking sites where you can upload your pictures so that you friends can see them.

Although, everything is not as easy as it seems. There is a 'dark side' to the internet, a side that is not as safe as you would like it to be. There are viruses, spam emails, porn sites, anit-everything sites, even sites that tell you how to kill yourselves. (not good!!!) Last week in a lecture Sue Grau was saying how supposedly 6/10 sites are pornography sites. If young children are playing games on the internet how easy must it be for them to access these sites? As said above, the internet can be a brilliant source to speak to your friends and family, to access information easily and for entertainment purposes, but if more and more of the internet turns to the 'dark side' will suddenly the world be influenced by all of this?

Topic 2 - Goebbel's

As Napoleon saw the press as '7th great power,' Goebbel saw the radio as being the 8th. He see's the radio as something that can not only help the government, but the other civilians also. Goebbel wanted to transform the soceity and to change the nation and he believed that the radio could do just that. He believed that this new technology (at that time) would be able to help the goverment, he stated that the this 'modern method' would influence the 'masses.'

In some way i agree with Goebbel, although on the other hand, I feel that the radio is no longer a 'modern method.' Yes, it is still a good form of communication, however, technology has created new media. Television and the internet being two extremely good for the use of the government. Although the television was created long before the internet, it has come a long way since it was invented and is forever modernising to suit it's audience at the time. The internet also is forever progressing, always thinking of new modern ideas. Although, in comparison to Goebbel's idea of how the radio can help the goverment, in this day and age you find that the media will publish things about the government whether it is for or against, which can therefore create a bad image for them.

Topic 1 - New ranges of Communication on the Internet

The internet is used by millions of people, with communication arguably been one of the main reasons for doing so. It allows the user to communicate not only with friends, but with people all around the world. However, companies also use the internet to communicate with users to advertise and sell their product.

The main three ways that I commincate on the internet is through the use of:

  • Email and email lists

  • IRL's chat rooms, messenger services

  • Websites

Emails, allows the user to email anyone who has an email address over the internet. However, email lists, acts as a sort of distributor which will distribute a certain email to all that are on the list. E.g. if you were on a mailing list for a particular shop they might send you an email advertising a new sale or somthing on the lines of that.

IRL'S chat rooms are something that i don't really use them for i believe they are a way of meeting completely new people. They allow people from all over the world to connect and communicate in one chat room. However, I use messenger services daily. They allow me to connect with my peers for free. In addition, it is a safe place for people of all ages to communicae with their friends, because you can only accept the people that you want to talk to, and block those that you don't.

Websites, are also another useful way of communication. These days, companies use the internet to have their own website. With this, they can put information about thier company so that if the user wanted to know more then they could go on their website. Additionally, websites can also provide users with contact information for companies around the world.

I've finally booked one!!!!!
