6) Disagreements with article 4

This negative article already has many disagreements in relation to teens using the inet. It discusses how teenagers are spending more time looking at the 'bad' things on the inet and less time for homework. It states that '1,000 children shows they spend one hour and 40 minutes a week on average looking at porn sites.' And they are also looking at sites with 'Information about cosmetic surgery.' Sonia Livingstone questioned 'whether reading is the same as reading used to be?' and i think that the majority of us answered that reading is not the same on the inet as it used to be. With the use of hyperlinks, users can be taken anywhere on the inet - something which one could argue is an amazing thing that web 2.0/web 3.0 offers us as a user. However, the question that i have to ask is do you think that these teens have purposefully gone onto the inet to search for porn sites or cosmetic surgery sites? Or have they been directed there via links from other pages? Are teens bad people even if we do look at those sites? If anything one could argue that it is education? Maybe that is taking it a little too far, however i feel that teens are not to be blamed for this sort of behaviour because the inet itself does allow us to access these sort of sites, and without the software there there isn't anything stopping these teens from viewing such sites.

  1. These questions all relate to Turkle's idea of freedom and should children be allowed to search thoroughly through the internet. People are used to a heavily moderated society so when you are allowed freedom people could begin to search for things that would be frowned upon IRL.
