Topic 2 - Identities

When asking if withholding your identity is ethically wrong, you first have to ask your self what is your definition of ethical? I think everybody's definition of ethical is different. If we say that ethical is to be conforming to social standards, this then means that this answer can be different throughout the world because everybody has different social standards. so i feel that this question is too broad. However, for me not that i believe that withholding your identity is wrong, although if someone was to add me as a contact either on facebook or msn, and i didn't know who they were then i wouldn't accept them. This meaning that it wouldn't matter whether they have withheld their identity. Likewise if someone rings me from a private number i refuse to answer it because their must be a reason as to why they have withheld it.
Although, to me personally i feel that is someone is withholding their identity they must be trying to hide something, they must have a secret. Something which can be argued happens a lot.

Although, i think there is a difference between withholding your identity and giving whole identity away. In this day and age, there are so many clever people that can access or hack peoples information resulting in identity fraud and then people can then access your bank accounts and steal your money. I am quite reluctant to sign up for things on websites that i do not know a lot about because they want to know your address your telephone numbers etc. Which to me is something that i do not want to give out regularly. However i think it is sad that it has to be like that, but you have to keep your information safe.

  1. I agree with your point Hannah. I think it is difficult to find a balance between withholding your identity and not revealing too much online on sites such as Facebook or Myspace. Do you think people accurately represent themselves on these sites or do you think people change themseleves to make them seem 'cooler,' and 'more fun?'

  2. I think in some cases people will adapt their profiles/pages/blogs in certain ways to make themselves appeal to other people, but I think it's more of a subconcious thing that we do, in a way part of human nature to try and make ourselves more likeable.

  3. yeah being seen as likeable plays a major part in the information people put on these webpages. Its all about promoting the parts of your characteristics that you like, and not mentioning anything negative.

  4. i think people do try to make them seem more cooler and fun to others so that they can be liked. however, i feel that im just the same to my friends online as i am offline. I wouldnt make myself to seem cooler to anyone else (i.e a stranger) because i dnt come on the internet to talk to others.
