'computers are not just changing our lives but changing our selves.'(taken from the reading on Turkle) The computer gives us chance to take part in sexuality experimentation, with this not 1 but several identities can be created. People can be who the want to be, or even maybe what they think they should be. The internet provides a space for you to try different identities, however if you didn't like one of them, or if other users started to trouble you you could delete one identity and start another.
Like Dave said, your never alone on the internet. You will always find someone with the same interest or same feelings as you. With this, a sense of belonging comes with it. If you have felt lonely in the 'real world' you can feel content on the internet. Take for example World of Warcraft, the most played game in the world. When i saw my flat mate play it i thought what a stupid game. However, people create their character, plan when they are going to meet with their group and fight these evil and weird things. This game allows people with the same interest to come and interact online, however they are not playing as themselves they are playing with their new identity. In addition, if you do something good or bad on the game, you either get congratulated or put down.
However, no matter what you are doing on the internet you can create a new self or selves without even knowing it.

Hello, so on this game, do they pretend to be monster or like good guys or something? if so, these types of personas are for entertainment purpose, with enhanced interactivity, these types of personas are understandable, but they are different to when a middle aged man pretends to be a young girl, then it becomes dangerous!
ReplyDeleteHannah i know this game very well! my brother and his friends were very into it. You have said claire that these personas are for entertainment, however having 'lived' with it, the people who play spend their days playing and its all they talk about(obviously not for all). I suppose like a hobby but often to the extreme, suggesting that it is for of a persona for communication or the chance to be something different.
ReplyDeleteLike you have said Dave commented 'you're never alone' with the internet as you always find someone with the same interest, but once again how do you know thats their real interest and not a persona that they would like to have. Could you be conversing with someone that isn't really interesting just wants to be invloved, try something new. Does it matter if they are 'fake' or not? I suppose you are not alone whether they are lieing or not, you are still talking about that interest with someone else.
that is exactly what it is. he arranges a time with the rest of the people on his team (who are around the world) and then play and communicate with each other. on one hand you could say they arent being fake because they know it is a game, but then on the other hand for them not to be fake they would need to have a character that just looked like them not as wizards and monsters etc.
