Topic 1 - nonlinear and nonsequential reading and wirting on Listers reading

Nonlinear and nonsequential reading and writing to me is what the web is all about. As discussed in the previous blog this type of reading and writing allows the produser to access information as to what a particular text would be about. Lister describes this as being a 'node' of text which carries a number of links that will take the produser to other 'nodes', a node being an active electronic device that is attached to other networks. However, Lister see's this as being a multi linear experience because when reading something on the web you have more that one pathway to choose from.
With this, i feel that the produsers knowledge can become broader, learning everything there is to know about the text that they are reading. In addition, Lister mentions the references and citations are also usually hyperlinked again, helping the produser to access more information about the text that they are reading.
Yes, i do feel that with these two factors it does capture the experience of the web. The web is there to be explored, produsers will come to the web intending to find something out, although in addition, they will end up finding out a lot more than what they expected. As Lister states 'it becomes permeable to other texts.'

  1. i agree hannah the web is definately there to be explored! I also think the 'produsers' knowledge can become broader as well, especially when researching topics for education. The hyperlinks can quickly take you to other sources with different information, unlike books in which you have to remember page numbers and find another book. The more we talk about the web the more i realise just how much it can do.

  2. Your posting is beginning to shape up now Hannah - you are, in this last post, developing a bit more of a critical tone. Stick with this and do more of it - try and keep away from too much involvement/emotional reaction. And don't put too much faith in those media panics about the "dark side" of the net - remember that papers have to sell themselves somehow! Keep your critical distance and you'll do fine. As to that non-linear question above - what could be the downside of all this info?

  3. i know i am discussing the 'dark side' again, however, if all of the text is hyperlinked across the whole f the web, you might end up fining out something that you didn't want to, or come across a website that you don't want to see.
