Topic 2 - Internet and the impact on Soceity

For me, the Internet is a free and easy way to not only access information but also to talk to your friends and family wherever they are in the world and for entertainment purposes also. Each day, there becomes new and easier ways to do things, like for example there are sites that can tell you how to get from A to B and there are social networking sites where you can upload your pictures so that you friends can see them.

Although, everything is not as easy as it seems. There is a 'dark side' to the internet, a side that is not as safe as you would like it to be. There are viruses, spam emails, porn sites, anit-everything sites, even sites that tell you how to kill yourselves. (not good!!!) Last week in a lecture Sue Grau was saying how supposedly 6/10 sites are pornography sites. If young children are playing games on the internet how easy must it be for them to access these sites? As said above, the internet can be a brilliant source to speak to your friends and family, to access information easily and for entertainment purposes, but if more and more of the internet turns to the 'dark side' will suddenly the world be influenced by all of this?

  1. Let's unpack some of these thoughts Hannah! What are the implications of being able to find out so easily on the internet how to get from A to B? how does that change people's behaviour in other areas of their lives - if atall?

What difference does it make to anyhting whether you can upload photos for your frineds? Cast your mind back perhaps 10 years ago when you couldn't do this (or not as easily) - how would you and your friends have looked at ech others photos? And when? where?! And so what?

so...there may be good and bad things that we can describe about the net - but let's move it forward and think about the implications of those things - then we get to the real impacts (or lack of them!!)

    Keep smiling!
